Accelerated learning program (ALP)

In the wake of violent displacement from northeastern Nigeria, countless youth aged 8-16 have had their primary education abruptly interrupted. These children arrive in IDP settlements with severely limited numeracy and literacy skills, facing a future with minimal vocational opportunities and restricted career paths.

Within the IDP settlements where we operate, we've identified over 100 young people eager to obtain their First School Leavers Certificate—the essential qualification awarded upon primary school completion. This certificate opens critical pathways to either secondary education or vocational training, breaking the cycle of limited opportunity.

Program Structure and Implementation

Education Plus has established two dedicated Accelerated Learning Hubs strategically located to serve these communities. Our comprehensive curriculum includes:

Mathematics: Building foundational numeracy skills essential for further education and daily life

English Language: Developing literacy and communication abilities crucial for academic and professional advancement

Social Studies: Fostering understanding of civic responsibilities and social structures

Elementary Science: Introducing fundamental scientific concepts and inquiry-based thinking

Classes operate on a schedule designed to accommodate students' other responsibilities:
• Weekdays: 2pm to 5pm
• Saturdays: 9am to 12pm

Program Objective and Timeline

The primary objective of this accelerated program is to prepare students—ideally within a single academic year—to successfully sit for and pass the First School Leavers Certificate examination. This intensive approach allows students who have lost years of educational opportunity to regain momentum toward their academic and professional futures.

Program Expansion Needs

Despite our success, the demand for this high-impact program dramatically outstrips our available resources. We currently maintain waiting lists of eager students across multiple communities. Additional funding will enable us to:

1. Establish additional Learning Hubs in underserved IDP settlements
2. Hire and train more qualified teachers
3. Provide essential learning materials to more students
4. Expand psychosocial support services
5. Extend program hours to accommodate more participants
